With midterms looming, Trump posts about boxing and shares boilerplate endorsements
The president's Florida, Texas and Colorado endorsements all followed roughly the same script.
Going into the weekend leading up to a consequential midterm election, Trump’s overnight posts to Truth Social were light on the kind of messaging one might expect from the leader of a political party.
Shortly after midnight, the president shared footage of the March 8, 1971, Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight. That night at Madison Square Garden, the two unbeaten fighters went 15 rounds. Frazier won a unanimous decision after flooring Ali with a left hook in the final round.
In a 2024 interview with podcaster Theo Von, Trump talked about attending Ali-Frazier I, also known as the Fight of the Century, with his father and brother. “I think that was the first fight I went to,” he said. “I always liked the boxing.”
He added: "Muhammad became a friend of mine. So did Joe, Joltin' Joe."
In a 2023 interview, Trump said "there was something so magic" about Ali and that "he was a genius at fighting."
Perhaps most aptly — as pertains to the upcoming election — roughly three years ago Trump posted: “Perhaps coincidence, or perhaps not, but BOXING died when they got rid of ‘The Championship Rounds,’ 13, 14, and 15. In the meantime, we have more important things to think about!”
Earlier in the evening, Trump posted a few dozen boilerplate endorsements for candidates in Florida, Texas and Colorado. All of the endorsements followed roughly the same format, describing the Republicans and their opponents in approximately the same way, with minor alterations depending on the context.
Virtually all of the Republicans were described as fighting “hard to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Advance MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Safeguard our Elections, Champion School Choice, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Support our Brave Military, Veterans, and Law Enforcement, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment.”
Each Republican candidate’s opponent, meanwhile, was characterized as “a Radical Left Democrat who is opposed to NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME, and NO TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY,” and “Reckless, Radical, and Dangerous!”
Trump added: If this person “and the Dumocrats ever got in, all of these things will be terminated. [They want] massive Tax Increases, Open Borders, Men playing in Women’s Sports, and Transgender Mutilization of your Children.”
