In 1,300-word screed, Trump complains about meeting ‘Goofball’ Bill Maher
Maher, in Trump’s telling, is nervous, insecure, unfunny, a pothead and a liar.
In many religions and popular culture, Sunday is a day of rest. But President Donald Trump was not resting on Sunday evening. He was writing a 1,323-word screed about comedian Bill Maher.
In an essay on Truth Social at 8 p.m. Sunday, Trump described how he had come to meet Maher: a mutual acquaintance who previously worked on The Apprentice had been hassling the president to do so. Kid Rock also petitioned Trump on Maher’s behalf.
Trump responded: “Fellas, this guy’s a Goofball.” Still, eventually, the two men met.
In the president’s telling, Maher did not impress.
“Bill was very nervous,” Trump wrote of their first meeting at the White House (a “seductive” place, per the president). “He asked for a drink. He was very insecure, and he had a seriously bruised eye and nose area, as though somebody had just beaten him up — But it wasn’t me!”
Trump eventually invited Maher back — for altruistic reasons: “I wanted to tell Bill that he’s a major POTHEAD. He’s got to stop, it’s very bad for his health.”
That more recent get-together, an Algonquin Round Table-like dinner at the White House with Kid Rock and TV personality Stephen A. Smith, “was a good meeting,” wrote Trump. A few sentences later, however, he changed his mind: “I learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time.”
“He’s not a nice guy, and what he spouts isn’t what he believes,” Trump wrote of Maher. “He has to cater to his base, which is mostly composed of Losers, and people who don’t like working.”
After critiquing several of Maher’s monologues and accusing the comedian of using a “Laughing Machine” to generate fake laughter during his show, the president ended with a sober message to the comedian — and the world: “I never watched your show much, but I will never watch it again, because it is nothing more than FAKE NEWS that America, and the World, is unfortunately subjected to.”
The wars in Iran and Ukraine continue. The midterm elections are in 8 days.
